The GUE/NGL denounces the fact that the Honduran people remain victims of violent repression following reports of killings[1] of members of the National Front of Resistance opposed to the coup d'état.
The GUE/NGL demands that the EU refrain from normalizing relations with the regime imposed by a coup d'état that maintains democratic and constitutional illegality in Honduras.
The GUE/NGL reaffirms its strong condemnation of the coup and its solidarity with the people and democratic forces in Honduras who, with remarkable persistence and determination, are continuing for months the struggle for the restoration of democracy and constitutional legality in their country.
The GUE/NGL considers the statements made by the EU as unacceptable, including that of the High Representative for Foreign Policy Catherine Ashton who stated that she hoped that the regime of Porfirio Lobo "initiates a new era, leading to a normalization of relations between Honduras and the EU".
The post-coup signing of an agreement between the EU and 11 Latin American countries, including Honduras, on the banana trade, also represents an implicit recognition of the de facto government as legitimate representatives of Honduras.
Thus, the GUE/NGL considers it unacceptable that the EU provides cover for the clear framework of democratic and constitutional illegality that the regime of Porfilio Lobo comes from, one which the EU itself has recognized as not allowing the free expression of popular will.
